What is floral foam — and why won't we use it?

Floral foam — the green brick hiding under most commercial arrangements — is a single-use plastic made with formaldehyde-based compounds. It's used once, then thrown away. It never biodegrades; it crumbles into microplastics that wash down drains and into waterways. Because it's cheap and convenient, most of the flower industry still uses millions of blocks of it every year.

We founded Flowers Alley boycotting floral foam entirely. There is no green brick under our arrangements — there never has been. #NoFloralFoam isn't a marketing line for us; it's how the studio has always worked.

How we build every arrangement instead

  • Chicken wire — our workhorse: shaped by hand inside the vessel, it holds every stem exactly where we place it and can be reused again and again.
  • Water, always — stems drink freely in clean water rather than sitting in saturated plastic, so our flowers arrive hydrated and last longer.
  • Reusable vessels — our vase arrangements arrive in a vase your recipient keeps.
  • Hand-tied technique — bouquets structured by skill, not foam.
  • Seasonal blooms, made to order — every arrangement made fresh on the day of delivery, never pre-made.

Foam-free for every occasion

Every arrangement on our site is foam-free by default — you never have to ask. That includes birthday flowers, anniversary flowers, sympathy flowers and everything in between. Foam-free is hardest at scale, and it's where we're proudest: our wedding flowers and event installations are built on chicken wire and reusable mechanics too — proof that sustainability and showpieces aren't a trade-off (see our wedding flower price guide for honest starting prices). And arrangements delivered to hospitals and grieving homes arrive in water, in a vase, ready to display — kinder to the recipient and the planet alike.

Frequently asked questions

Is Flowers Alley completely floral-foam-free?
Yes — 100%. Every arrangement we have made since opening in 2021 has been built without floral foam, using chicken wire and sustainable alternatives instead. This applies to everything we make: bouquets, vase arrangements, sympathy flowers, weddings and events.

What do you use instead of floral foam?
Chicken wire is our main mechanic — shaped by hand inside the vessel, it holds every stem exactly where we place it and can be reused indefinitely. We combine it with clean water, reusable vessels and hand-tied techniques.

Why is floral foam bad?
It's a single-use plastic made with formaldehyde-based compounds. It's used once, thrown away, and never biodegrades — it breaks down into microplastics that end up in waterways. The flower industry uses millions of blocks a year.

Do foam-free flowers cost more?
No — our arrangements start from $75, in line with conventional florists. Foam-free takes more skill, not more money.

Do foam-free arrangements last as long?
In our experience they last longer — stems in clean water drink freely, while foam restricts uptake and harbours bacteria as it breaks down. Combined with being made fresh on the morning of delivery, our flowers arrive at their absolute best.

Can I get foam-free flowers delivered today?
Yes — order before 12pm Monday to Friday for guaranteed same day delivery across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, to over 300 suburbs including hospitals.
