Types of lilies

Oriental lilies — The classic. Large, open blooms with a rich, heady fragrance — white orientals are the most popular lily for gifting and the flower most associated with sympathy and remembrance.

Asiatic lilies — Bold, bright colours with little to no scent — a great choice for anyone sensitive to fragrance.

LA hybrid lilies — A cross between longiflorum and Asiatic varieties: big flowers, vivid colours, light fragrance and excellent vase life.

Longiflorum lilies — Elegant white trumpets, often called November lilies in Australia for their natural late-spring flowering.

Not actually lilies: calla lilies and arum lilies are from a different plant family entirely, and the peace lily is a leafy indoor plant (Spathiphyllum) — beautiful, but botanically not a lily at all.

What do lilies mean?

Lilies have symbolised purity, devotion and remembrance for thousands of years. White lilies in particular are the traditional flower of sympathy, which is why they feature so often in funeral flowers and condolence arrangements — but bright Asiatic and LA lilies carry a completely different energy, and make joyful birthday and congratulations flowers.

Lily care: making your lilies last

Lilies are among the longest-lasting cut flowers — expect 10 to 14 days in the vase with a little care. We deliver lilies in bud with the first blooms just opening, so you enjoy the full display as it unfolds. Trim stems on an angle, change the water every couple of days, and keep them away from direct sun and ripening fruit. One florist's tip: once each bloom opens, gently remove the orange anthers — it keeps the pollen off petals, clothing and tablecloths, where it can stain.

True lilies (oriental, Asiatic, LA and longiflorum varieties) are highly toxic to cats — even small exposures like pollen on fur or drinking vase water can cause serious harm. If the recipient has a cat, choose a different flower: our roses, orchids or native arrangements are all beautiful cat-safe alternatives. Add a note at checkout and our florists will design accordingly.

When are lilies in season?

Are lilies safe for cats?
No — true lilies are highly toxic to cats, and even pollen or vase water can cause serious harm. If a cat lives in the home, choose roses, orchids or natives instead — we're happy to recommend a cat-safe arrangement.

How long do lilies last in a vase?
